Sentara New Year's Day 5K (3.1 miles):--
No better way to start off the New Year then to...run a 5K. Susan
C has been running this New years Day 5k since her recovery from
cancer...and this year Michele and I wanted to share it with her.
New Years Day 2012 was near perfect with bright sun shine and mild
temps. A nice field of about 300 runners turned out and for a
local 5k the support and post race swag was great. My goal again
was to run a sub 24m 5k, I finished at 24m 16s...so close, but
again......so far. I ran the race they way I wanted and felt
really good about my effort. I think I lost my goal at the
start...I know walkers are a big part of these events...and I have a
walker whom I lover, but pls start at near the back or move to the
sides. It took me a solid .25 mile to work my way out of the
traffic at the start. My ego keeps me from starting at the front
of the pack figuring I don't want to get in the way of the really fast
runners....I would only like the same consideration from the slower
runners. Okay off my soap box...I just need to run faster.
Michele finished in 42m and had a great day.

Sea Shore Nature Trail 50K (31 miles):--
This was my first 50K Ultra-marathon, my plan for this race was to use it
as a 20 mile "supported" run and run/power-walk the remaining 11 miles.
Having run the Richmond marathon in Nov. I figured this would be an easy
training run. The opening miles were easy and it was a joy to run
on nice groomed trails. All went well until mile 15 when I felt more tired,
more taxed, more used up then I figured I should have. Struggling I made it to the 20 mile
mark, and was beat...and if truth be told I was ready to give up.
Not wanting to tell the world that I DNF, after refueling I headed back
out on the course and powered walked the next 5 miles and managed to run/walk the
closing 5. I finished in 6 hours 49 minutes and was very humbled
by this run. The race support staff
was the best I have ever experienced, everything from event sign in and
packet pick-up, to starting line, aide stations and finishing line was
top notch. Hats off to all the
volunteers! THANK YOU! For more information on the
race click here.

24 Nov USMC Toys for Tots Turkey Day
5k/10k:-- Great
Thanksgiving Day run with a ton of friends. Michele walked/ran the
5k finishing in 39m02s...and I ran the 10k. Going into the race I had hoped for a sub
50m time, but my GPS battery was dead. I knew without out my trusty
Garmin to pace me....it might be tough to run the time I wanted.
Well....that and the hills slowed me down to a 52m finish. I'm happy,
wish I could have done better...but I felt good and it was a near
perfect day. To view the race route click
here. The route for both races was an out and back course over mostly paved roads.
The 5K route runs along a perimeter road on the edge of The Mariner's
Museum property, onto Museum Drive, across Lion's Bridge and then turns
around just inside the east gates of the Museum. The 10K route runs the
same route but continues through the Museum property, out the West gates
and around the loop of the Lakeside neighborhood. It returns along the
same course through the Museum property.
The course has a total ascent of 104.99ft and
has a maximum elevation of 95.14ft. Reviewing my race I think I
went out a bit too fast and it took its toll on the hill climbs on the
way back to the finish.
12 Nov Richmond Marathon on My Birthday
(26.2 miles):--
Done....5th Marathon
in the books. 4 hours 47minutes....on my 47 birthday!

Jamestown to Yorktown Training Run (20 miles):--
Running pal Joshua W. had a great idea, let's run from Jamestown
settlement to the Yorktown battlefields. And it sure sounded like
a good run at the time, a training run from one point in our nations
history, the first settlement, to another, the end of the revolutionary
war in Yorktown. This route sounded like a great way to get ready
for a fall marathon, then we visited "map my run" web-site and mapped
out our course which can be seen here:
River 2 River Run
. After reviewing our route, this defiantly was going to be a
challenging run....20+ miles with hills and hills and some more hills!
Over the next few months we talked up this run but only 4 people were
interested in running this. Joshua W, Jon H, Susan C and myself
all lined up early Saturday morning and off we went. Supporting us
on this run was Steve "the cops can't catch me" K. and my wonderful Hot
Wife, Michele. Along the way Jon's wife Cara and kids joined the
roaring crowds to be soon followed by Joshua W's wife Devin and kids to
cheer on there Iron men. Pictures can be seen here
At the start,
Wonderful winding roads, and
Mile 19 of 20. Will we do it again......How's February sound?

June XTERRA Richmond Half Marathon Trail Run (13.1 Miles):--
XTERRA
trail runs are renowned for there urban trail system. The Richmond
XTERRA run offered an opportunity to experience “legendary” root
slipping, mud hopping, tree ducking, river crossing, hill climbing, dirt
on your shirt (and shoes) and sweat in your eye trail runs. The
Richmond run was advertised as the most challenging trails, in the
series, and this side of Grandma’s house! And just like Grandma,
they did not let us down, at one point I thought I was running thru
Jurassic park, only thing missing was the rampaging T-Rex about to eat
me. The race course offered some of the most unique terrain I've
ever run over with both man-made and natural obstacles from the
Manchester
staircase climb
(known as the “Mayan Ruins”) to rock hopping over the James River,
followed by a climb up a ships ladder. This run was never boring,
you never knew what was right around the next corner or over the next
hill. This half marathon was tough from the opening cannon shot
which started the run, and scared a few years off my life. 2hr 28m
09s later.....the run (battle) was over. And for the first few
minutes of my recovery, I wasn’t sure who won? But the experience
will be in my mind for years to come. Will I run this
again......deep pause, pondering my place in the universe…..XTERRA
Richmond 2012....count me in! Bid

Chick-Fil-A 5k (3.1 miles):--
On
this Saturday morning, Michele and I, with a few
friends
ran with the Mooooo...AKA….The Chick-Fil-A 5k at the Mariners
Museum. Michele and I signed up to run this event, because we knew
that the Cows of Chick-Fil-A know how to party and there was going to be
free food! Michele set off to power walk and I had a goal of
running the 3.1 miles under 24 minutes. This would be the first
race I've run in a long while where speed was a consideration. To
say the Chick-Fil-A cows know how to party, would be an understatement
of utter missed marksmanship....a great family event. To kick of
the days races the Cows hosted a terrific mile run for the kids. I
wish I could have as much fun and show as much determination as those
little ones...they were great
Michele rocked her goal and finished in
a strong 43m 29s.....I finished in 24m 09s
and although daunted and bumped that I did not meet my goal, the spicy
chicken sandwich made up for it! Not
sub 24min like I wanted but I finished #122 of 1122 and #5 out of 45 in
my age group.
Next year I might try and run it in
a cow suit.

22 May Run for the Dream Half
(13.1 miles):-- I
ran in the inaugural "Run For The Dream Half Marathon" in Williamsburg,
Va. Not only was it the first running of this event, but I also ran this
with two friends, Josh H, and Susan C.
but this
run was not so much about my performance, but about supporting a friend
from Church. One Sunday when I was talking with a fellow runner
this women came up to me and began talking about running. One
thing led to another and she told me her story about over coming breast
cancer and RA and running. She mentioned she would like to run a
half but had no one to train with. Well, I said "I'll run....with
ya." So the last few weeks we have been running long runs getting
her ready. Then a set back, a week before the half, she came down
with Achilles tendonitis..... After seeing a doctor, she was given
a clean but painful bill of health. She could run the race but
would be a fair amount of discomfort. Sunday morning, we set off
on a painful 13.1 miles....and 2h 23mins later we made her goal of
finishing the race only walking the water stops. She did
good....and I felt a great sense of pride helping someone else reach
there goals.

30 Oct Blue Moon Wicked
10K (6.2 miles):-- I ran this 10k dressed in full Cleveland Browns
Uniform, I had two goals....#1 to not allow any stoolers fans to pass me
up and to not drop the football I was carrying. Well I conqueared
both goals....not stoolers dressed fans passed me and the football
stayed tucked in my arms the entire run. I finished in 1hr 00m
32sec (see me here) and got 24 Go browns
along the way! My wonderful Michele ran dressed in a hospital gown
with her butt hanging out! Great "fun run" with all kinds of
costumes, a must run event!

Tide Water Striders Distance Series (3 races 20k, 25k and 30K):
2008 Running
Goals/Events:
After my deployment, and decision to retire from the Air Force,
my running took another period on the back burner...then early Sept 2008
I laced my shoes back up and returned to logging miles.
2007 Running
Goals/Events:
Oct - Jan 08:-- During this deployed time I was able to keep up my running while
working the night shift. The 10+ hours days and the intense heat shifted
my running into the wee hours of the morning, most runs beginning at
2400 and after work. I logged nearly 500 miles running the 5 mile
loop around base and entering the fun runs hosted by the fitness staff
including a half marathon which I ran on 3 hours of sleep after a 10
hour shift....I finished but it almost killed me. LOL.....
Oct USAF Al-Udied Half Marathon
(13.1 Miles):-- Since I could not run the Marine Corp
Marathon, while deployed I ran the Al-Udied Half Marathon.....did
I mention I ran it with 3 hours sleep?
See the pics here, here and here
Marine
Corp Marathon:-- I signed up and after running
all summer...getting in solid marathon shape with 3 long runs over 20
miles...the Air Force wanted me to deploy and meeting my nations call,
off I went to Al Udied Air base Qatar.
28 July
Red River 10k (6.2 miles):-- Cold Spring, Minnesota ran this race in 48m 25sec......Michele ran
the 5k. Bid/Medal
14 Apr Dismal Swamp Half Marathon
(13.1 miles):-- Most Sport Super Stars will
tell you....some days you just know it is going to be your day. My
plan for this race was to try and finish someplace near the Shamrock
time of 1h 51m but I never figured I would have enough in me to approach
my PB. By mile 2....that thought was
gone.
Bid/Medal
17 Mar Shamrock Half Marathon (13.1
miles):-- Before my break from Marathon running I had
planned to run the Shamrock Marathon in the spring of 06...but that plan
never materialized. My first goal upon getting back to marathon
distance running was to run the Shamrock Half. I figured with 6
months to train I could get back my lungs and legs in time for the
Saint Paddy's event. Well, I will tell you....my plan
came together alot easier then I ever imagined. By Dec I had
already exceeded the Half Marathon distance and by Jan I had crossed the
15 mile mark. The St Paddy's
run would be easy, not that running 13.1 miles is ever easy.
The run kicked off at 0700 on a cold brisk day...it was very exciting to
be toeing the starting line once again. I never realized how much
I missed it. Standing in the middle of 4,000 people, all ready to
battle the next 13.1 miles...I was a bit nervous. In 1h 51m 51s
(chip time) I closed the first chapter on my return to running when I
crossed the finish line on Virginia Beach Boardwalk. Although not
a PB I was very happy to get this first run behind me....and Did I
mentioned I signed up for the
MARINE CORP MARATHON in Oct. Here is a picture of me as I
close out the race...notice the air time (both feet off the ground)

12 Nov Richmond
Marathon (26.2 miles):-- HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME
2nd Marathon.....How many times in your life are you able to run a
marathon on your birthday? When I came across the add for this
marathon in a copy of Runner's World and noticed the date and relative
location...I just knew I had to run this race. Add in the fact
that Richmond was named the Friendliest Marathon by the Runner's World
staff...made it an easy choice for my second Marathon and new PB 4h
10m 39m (chip time). For all the high lights

30 May Brandon
Forest 1/2 Marathon (13.1 miles):--
Next to the Marathon, I would have to say the "Half Mary"
is my favorite event. The Half is long enough for most people to
think your crazy for running it but not so long (like the marathon) to
really take a toll on your body. The Brandon Half was close to
home, run in a near by forest and was my first "trail"
Half. My goal was to finish under 1h 50m...no mater by how much.
This event was a challenge...with 3 loops around a clover leaf course
featuring good hills and soft trails which took a lot of juice out of my
legs. I was surprised and shocked that at mile four I was thinking of
dropping out. DNF...no way, I could not have lived with
myself...so I pressed on, fought my way past mid point and came home
strong. 1h 49m 53s...I made my goal with a run that started
off badly. I guess we all have bad days, at home, at work and at
the races...but you can overcome.
Bid/Medal
25 May AF 1.5 mile fitness test (1.5 miles):--
All the other running events are for fun, this one counts towards my
job. And little over a year ago I was hoping to break 12 minutes
in the mile and half, but today I was looking to go under 10 minutes and
max out my sit ups and push ups. The run was easy, I ran near my
target pace and set a new PB but failed to break 10 minutes, I was a bit
bummed at that. But the Sit ups and Push ups...I MAX'd out.
50 sit ups and 50 push ups...97.25 out of a possible score of 100.
Not bad for a 40 year old.

18 May Great
Yarmouth, UK 5 Miler:-- Part
of my marathon training plan had me running a 5 mile Time-Trial (TT) to
build and gauge my speed and fitness. My first 5 mile TT run I turned in
38m 27 (Jan) and had worked my time down to 37m 08s (Mar) This
little run after my marathon gave me the perfect opportunity to see if I
still had any speed left in me or if maybe I had improved. Run on
a Wednesday night, my pal Garth P. and I headed out after work, 2 hours
later we were on the line at Great Yarmouth, facing a cool and windy
conditions. After coming off the line a bit fast, 5m 47m pace the
first quarter mile I settled into a nice pace crossing the line at 37m
23s.

24 Apr Shakespeare Marathon (26.2 miles):--
MY FIRST MARATHON.....You'll never forget your first kiss, car, love
(then divorce) and you'll never forget your first marathon. 6
months ago I had the wild idea of again trying to push my body to the
point that I could run 26.2 miles. And now after nearly 900 miles, five
races, three 20 mile runs and tons of lonely runs in the wee hours of
the morning, in the cold damp fog of the UK, I was standing on the
starting line of my first marathon...(click
here). Another highlight of my first marathon was that the
base paper picked up on my story and published a
one page feature on my training and run.

13 Mar Flora
Adidas London 1/2 Marathon (13.1 miles):--
When I decided to run a marathon my first choice was to try and get into
the London Marathon. But that race is the envy of all UK runners
and I was not able to ... for a place, when I saw the little sister to
that event, the 1/2 marathon, two clicks of the mouse and I was in.
Silverstone offered a flat fast course, for a full race report...(click

Miler:-- For runner
looking forward to competing in a marathon the 20 mile long run is a
training standard and a landmark run on your way to gaining the
confidence need to tackle 26.2 miles. I signed up for this run
nearly a month prior, and although I exceed new weekly distances,
previous long run distances I always knew the 20 miler was up and
coming... for a full race report...(click

20 Feb Wellingborough Multi-Terrain 15k (9.3 miles):--
At first I balked at running a cross country type event. But after
thinking about it and comparing the run to the challenges on the popular
Survivor TV show, I figured I would jump on the trail bandwagon and give
it a go. After a little research and recommendations I found
this multi-terrain run series hosted by a club just a hour and a half
away from our home. The run consisted of running three loops
around a park covering varying surfaces and hills with one good size
muddy (if it was wet) hill climb. My goal: To finish in 75 minutes
or less and not be taken prisoner by the hills, and although I finish
with mud up to my ankles the clock ticked 73:01 as I crossed the line...

Watford Half Marathon (13.1 miles):-- I went
into this race wanting to run something a little longer then 10k.
It also seamed like a challenge I had to get past on my way to the 26.2
mile goal. Surfing the events listed on Runners World UK this
event was close enough to home and with a crowd of 2,000 expected seamed
like a good opportunity. The course was advertised as undulating
and conversations with Garth convinced me this was going to be a
challenge...one I hoped I was up for. My goal: To finish under 2
hours, for a full race report...click

22 Jan RAF Mildenhall 5k (3.1 miles):--
Normally the base holds a 5k "Fun Run" every month, but this run took on
a little more added importance. One of the young Lts in my office
beat me bad last year in a race I challenged him in and since I have not
heard the end of it. With a little bit of ribbing I talked him
into a rematch with a lunch due the winner. After a fast start
where I fell behind by 10 yards or so I was able to reel him in at
that half way mark and gain the lead as we headed towards home. I
finished in 22:01
and took home 3rd place...my first medal. Big news for the day was
that our Squadron (352 OSS) finish 1, 2, 3 and 4th. Pictures:

31 Dec Ely New
Years Eve 10K (6.2 miles):--
This was my first race (outside of base 5k Fun Runs) since deciding to
run a marathon type distances again. To say I did not know what to
expect out of my legs or this race was an understatement. A friend
of mine (an Ultra runner) and my running mentor had run this race in the
past and gave me the low down on the course. I had trained pretty
good, and felt I was in good shape for this race logging 122 miles in
Dec and a solid 90 or more in Nov and Oct. A combination of a poor
start and "the hill" got to me, I finished in 49:07 off my goal
of a sub 48. Pictures: Ely 10K
